I Always Knew You Were Just Passing Through

I always knew you were just passing through
With your tussled hair
And dark eyes I knew I was just a way station
A place to park your heart
Before some marvelous adventure
I saw the sparks flying off you,
The tenderness.
The optimism.
The Anger
The love,
The annoyance
Like a knife sharpened on a stone
as you
flashed by with your hips
and raw emotions
and memories of home
All too fresh for a girl so young
And for a woman so sure of herself
Such an ancient soul in modern shoes
I know you and still watch as you go
I will keep this parking space
for you
It is your place in my history
I always knew you were just passing through
I just didn’t know it would be so soon.
You leave me with these old fools.
I knew you were just passing through
In your low heels and beaten silver jewellery
With your good taste and amused demeanour
Your legs were too perfect to stay in one
place.
They were made for travel,
And for so many more to see.
